    Fishing FAQ

    Questions from the dock

Still stuck? Try the Tackle Finder or contact us.

What fishing gear do I need to start?

A 7 foot medium spinning rod and reel combo, 8 to 10 lb line, a small assortment of lures (soft plastics, a spinner and a crankbait), a few hooks and weights, and pliers. Our Tackle Finder builds a setup for your exact fish and spot.

Do castable fish finders really work from shore?

Yes. A castable or wireless sonar floats on the surface and sends depth, bottom structure and fish readings to a handheld screen or your phone, so you can scout water from the bank, a dock, a kayak or the ice.

What is a GPS bait boat used for?

A GPS bait boat carries bait, groundbait and rigs to spots far beyond casting range. GPS models save your hotspots and return home automatically, which makes them popular with carp and catfish anglers.

When is the best time of day to fish?

Dawn and dusk are reliable, and solunar major periods (moon overhead or underfoot) often trigger feeding. Check the free 7-day bite forecast above for windows near you.

    Braid, mono or fluorocarbon?

Braid is thin and sensitive with no stretch, mono is forgiving and affordable, and fluorocarbon is nearly invisible underwater. Many anglers spool braid with a fluoro leader. Use the line calculator to match your fish and cover.
