GPS Bait Boats Explained: How They Work and Who Should Buy One

A bait boat is a small remote-controlled boat that carries bait, groundbait and rigs out to a spot and drops them exactly where you want. Modern models add GPS and even sonar, which turns them into some of the most advanced fishing tech you can buy.

How a bait boat works

  1. Load the hopper with groundbait, pellets or your hookbait and rig.
  2. Drive the boat out with the remote, or tap a saved GPS spot and let it drive itself.
  3. Open the hopper to drop the bait and release the line.
  4. The boat returns to shore, often automatically.

Features that matter

  • GPS memory and auto-return: save hotspots and hit the exact same spot every session. Auto-return brings the boat home if the battery gets low or signal drops.
  • Built-in sonar: some boats show depth and fish on a color screen, so you can find a feature before you drop.
  • Hopper size and load: bigger hoppers mean fewer trips. Look at the maximum load rating.
  • Range: 300 to 500 meters covers most lakes.
  • Battery life: spare batteries let you fish all weekend.

Who should buy one?

Bait boats are a favorite with carp and catfish anglers who fish from the bank for long sessions, anglers on big reservoirs where the fish hold beyond casting range, and anyone who wants pinpoint accuracy when baiting a spot. Pair one with a set of wireless bite alarms and you can relax at camp until you get a run.

Before you launch

Bait boat rules vary by water, so always check local regulations and fishery rules before using one. Keep the boat in sight, and never drive it near swimmers or other anglers' lines.
