Angler casting from rocks at first light

Best Time to Fish: Solunar Tables, Weather and Water Temperature Explained

Ask ten anglers the best time to fish and you will hear "early morning" from most of them. They are not wrong, but there is more to it. Here are the four factors that matter most.

1. Light: dawn and dusk

Low light gives predators an advantage, so many species feed hardest around sunrise and sunset. Walleye and big bass especially love low light.

2. The moon: solunar periods

Solunar theory says fish and wildlife are more active at predictable times tied to the moon's position:

  • Major periods last about two hours, centered on when the moon is directly overhead or directly underfoot.
  • Minor periods last about an hour, centered on moonrise and moonset.
  • Days around the new and full moon tend to rate highest.

When a major period lines up with sunrise or sunset, that is a window worth planning around. Check our free 7-day bite forecast to see the windows for your area.

3. Weather

  • Before a front: falling pressure and clouds often trigger a feeding spree.
  • After a cold front: bright skies and rising pressure can shut fish down. Slow down and fish tight to cover.
  • Overcast and light wind: fish roam and feed more confidently. Great for moving baits.

4. Water temperature

Fish are cold-blooded, so water temperature controls their metabolism. Each species has a comfort range. Bass get most active in roughly the mid-60s to around 80°F, while trout prefer cooler water in the 50s. Use the water temperature guide to see which species are peaking.

Put it together

The best days stack the odds: a major solunar period near sunrise or sunset, stable or falling pressure, and water temperatures in your target species' comfort zone. Then use a fish finder to find where they are holding.
